GitHub Copilot Adjusts Student Plan Models

Today, May 7, 2026, GitHub announced a major shift for educational users. To keep the platform free and sustainable for millions of verified students, the GitHub Copilot Student plan is restricting access to frontier models. Moving forward, high-end models like GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.4, and Anthropic's Claude Opus will no longer be available for self-selection on the free academic tier.

Students will still retain access to standard auto-selected models and their existing premium request unit entitlements. Your academic verification status will not change, and the user interface will still display the active student plan. However, developers who require specific manual access to GPT-5.4 or Claude Opus will need to use the newly added upgrade paths to transition to a paid Copilot Pro or Pro+ subscription.

This marks a significant pivot in how AI providers balance massive educational usage with the soaring inference costs of top-tier models. As agentic coding workflows become the norm, the compute required for a single prompt has multiplied. By limiting frontier model selection, GitHub ensures the base Copilot experience remains accessible to beginners without bankrupting their infrastructure.

Cursor SDK and Enterprise Guardrails

Cursor continues to push the envelope for agent orchestration. In their May 6 update, they introduced the highly anticipated Cursor SDK. This new toolset allows developers to build programmatic agents using the exact same runtime, harness, and models that power the core Cursor desktop experience.

Copilot Code Review Bills to Actions Minutes

In another major ecosystem update, GitHub is changing how it bills for automated pull request analysis. According to their late April release notes, GitHub Copilot code review will begin consuming GitHub Actions minutes starting June 1, 2026. This policy change impacts users across the Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise tiers.

Until now, AI-driven code reviews were largely treated as a flat-rate feature bundled within the core Copilot subscription. Because these reviews run autonomously in the background whenever a pull request is opened or updated, they require dedicated serverless compute. Tying these reviews directly to GitHub Actions compute minutes means engineering teams will need to monitor their continuous integration budgets much closer.

Devin for Terminal is a fast, Rust-based CLI workflow that is highly optimized for interactive work. Because it runs locally, it gains full, unrestricted access to your codebase, environment variables, and build tools. The most impressive feature is the seamless cloud handoff.
